Sculptural artifacts
from ancient
300-year-old oaks
Handcrafted by
Alexander Cheglakov
Alexander Cheglakov creates sculptures from 300-year-old oak trees that once grew in places connected to Napoleon’s 1812 campaign. Working entirely by hand, he transforms each fragment of ancient wood into a one-of-a-kind piece that carries history, character, and a warm atmospheric glow.

His works combine natural form, antique materials, and subtle candlelight, making every sculpture feel alive and emotionally charged.
Alexander Cheglakov is an award-winning artist who gives a second life to centuries-old trees.
About the Artist
In October 1812, as Napoleon’s army retreated from Moscow, it passed through the village of Fominskoye—now Naro-Fominsk. Here, on the banks of the Nara River, Napoleon spent the night of October 21–22 and, according to legend, wrote a letter to Josephine.

This collection carries an invisible energy, a certain aura emitted from the master's works. Notably, these trees bore witness to the historical events of 1812 involving Napoleon Bonaparte. The trees from which these pieces are crafted were the silent observers of these significant moments in history. To touch these trees is to connect with history itself.

As Eleanor Roosevelt eloquently stated, "THE ONLY THINGS WORTH ADMIRING ARE THOSE THAT ARE ADMIRED WITHOUT KNOWING WHY." This collection encapsulates this sentiment, inviting awe and wonder at the convergence of nature, history, and artistic mastery.

The Moscow stage of the tour was held in Raevo Golf & Country Club. There, they also presented the artworks of an artist Alexander Cheglakov who created his sculptures from fallen dry oak trees of more than 300 years old. What had this to do with Bentley? The company uses natural wood while making its cars, always caring about environmental protection. Thus, for interiors they use the wood obtained from fallen trees, which had been lying in peat bogs, lakes and rivers of East Anglia for over 5000 years.

Animalism is one of the most interesting
genres in sculpture.
Animalism explores the character, movement, and symbolic power of wild animals. This direction in sculpture highlights the connection between nature and human imagination. In my work, animal figures appear as expressive accents that bring emotion, meaning, and a sense of living presence to each wooden form.

Prayer
Dimensions: 25 × 10 × 27 in
Weight: 27 pounds

This sculpture is created from a centuries-old oak trunk that was struck by lightning and burned out from within. Its natural curve formed a waning-crescent shape long before it became art. A bronze figurine of a praying man is placed at the base of the crescent, gazing upward. His prayer rug hovers slightly above the surface, adding a touch of magic, almost like a flying carpet from an old Eastern tale. A single candle is installed on a tall stand beside the figure. The flickering flame illuminates the bronze and casts soft reflections across the textured charred wood. In the upper part of the crescent, a metal star is suspended on a thin thread, catching the light and reinforcing the quiet, contemplative mood. The stand is made of Siberian larch and finished to echo the stone-like geometry of the sacred Kaaba. The surface of the artwork is protected with special wax and lightly tinted with gold pigment, highlighting the natural relief of the ancient oak.

The wall clock is crafted from a cross-section of a centuries-old oak tree. Natural fragments of oak bark mark the hours, giving the piece a sculptural, tactile depth. The crescent at the top is an organic part of the trunk — once the beginning of a branch — now transformed into a symbolic accent. The surface is finished with wax and gilding, enhancing the texture and solemn character of the ancient wood. The name As-Salam refers to one of the 99 Beautiful Names of Allah, meaning The Source of Peace. Wings of Soulrise
Dimensions: 35 × 8 × 23 in
Weight: approx. 21 lbs

Description:

Wings of Soulrise is crafted from the outer sector of a three-hundred-year-old oak. Two mirrored fragments form a pair of wings, with the shamash rising gently between them. Four candles rest on each wing, transforming the piece into a Hanukkiah where light unfolds like the ascent of the soul.

The natural curvature of the oak preserves its character, while soft gold and wax highlight the depth of the centuries it has lived through. When the candles are lit, the wings create a sense of elevation, echoing the tradition in which light always ascends.

The base, carved from the same ancient wood, unites the composition into a single form — like a rooted memory carrying its quiet blessing forward.

Sacred Oak
Dimensions: 28 × 8 × 20 in
Weight: ~20 lbs

Sacred Oak is crafted from a section of a three-hundred-year-old oak trunk, its inner surface charred by a lightning strike. This sculpture is crafted from larch and designed as a slender, upward-growing tree form. Five candles are placed along the branching structure, creating a soft vertical rhythm of light. At the top sits a piece of Sicilian glass, adding a delicate accent and a quiet sense of elevation. The wood is treated with wax and finished using blackening and gilding techniques, giving the surface depth, texture, and a refined natural tone. The piece works as a decorative focal point and brings an atmospheric glow to any setting.

The wood comes from three-hundred-year-old oaks that grew in the historic lands where Napoleon passed during his 1812 campaign and wrote a letter to Josephine.

Embrace of Zeus
Dimensions: 37 × 13 × 39 in
Weight: 54 lbs

Crafted from the base of a 300-year-old oak tree once struck by lightning, this sculpture carries the natural burn patterns and deep textures formed over centuries. The dramatic, curved fragments create an open, almost mythic silhouette that evokes the ancient belief that lightning-marked trees were touched by Zeus, the ruler of sky and thunder. Candles placed along the inner arc reveal the scorched relief and amplify the sense of hidden energy within the wood. The central vertical candle strengthens the upward movement, bringing a feeling of power and reverence. The piece is mounted on a solid Siberian-larch base, adding stability and a grounded contrast to the dynamic form above. A rare large-scale work with strong symbolic presence, ideal for collectors and gallery interiors.
